Match Report for 30th December, Hill Barn

The weather was kinder than expected when we played our last match of the year at Hill Barn on the 30th December.  Although windy, the rain held off until almost all of the 35 players had completed their round. The course was in better shape than most but very wet underfoot and with the greens showing the effect of a wet Autumn. Nonetheless, the scores weren’t that bad with Norman Carter winning with 36 points off a handicap of 24, closely followed by Tony Standing with 35 points off 22 and Dave Sayers 34 points  off 18.  Brian Sands took Nearest the Pin on the 5th, Dennis Goldsmith Nearest the Pin in 2 on the 8th, Phil Mottershead Nearest the Pin on the 11th and Chris Adams had the longest drive on the 13th

This was the last event for this year. Our prize giving lunch will be held at the Clubhouse on Sunday 21st February 2016 and  Mark Weaving takes over as Captain of the society assisted by John Hofton as Vice Captain.

The first match next season will be in March

Match Report for 16th November, Lewes

We played at Lewes GC on Monday the 16th November. A Downland course that drains well and remains playable when others are not, Lewes is a good choice for our November meeting. Although the weather was sunny but windy on the day, the previous run of wet weather deterred a number of players and the field was our smallest of the year at 18.

Dave Kennett triumphed with a score of 37 points off 27, a long  putt on the 18th snatching victory from John White 36 points off 28. Norman Carter took 3rd place with 35 points off a handicap of 24. The other  prizes  mostly went to the low handicap players: Nearest the Pin in 2 on hole 3 was won by Martin Manvell, Nearest the Pin on 6 Mark Weaving and on 12 Phil Mottershead. Dave Kennett took the Longest drive on 14 and the rollover 2’s pot shared between John White and Mark Weaving.

Match Report for 15th September, Littlehampton

Tuesday the 15th September saw the Golf Society visit the only true Links course in West Sussex, Littlehampton.

30 members braved the wet and windy conditions and although it was a particularly tough day the scores were better than might be expected. Dave Lindsay(36 points of 28) won with Phil Godby taking second place from Tony Whittaker on count back (both 35 points off 28).

Nearest the pin prizes went to Martin Manvell and John Trussel and Richie Laing made the Longest Drive. Nobody managed to hit the short 7th  in 2 and the prize will be rolled over to the next match at East Brighton on the 21st October.

Many thanks to John Sear who sponsored the day

So far members have collected £245  towards The Shaun Brett Player of the Year Trophy. Details will be finalised by the Society AGM in November and the trophy awarded at the January prize giving.

Match Report for 19th August, Rookwood Golf Club

The 19th of August was Captain’s Day for the Golf Society and our 3 Clubs and a Putter competition  was held at Rookwood Golf Club.

Although this is a’ non-qualifier’ and no alterations were made to member’s handicaps nearly 20% of the field either played to their handicap or better, maybe a higher proportion than might be expected with a full set of clubs.

Mike Thompson  (39 points off 17) won on countback from Norman Carter 39 (points off 24) with Joe Bennett (37 points off 18) in third place.

Nearest the Pin prizes went to Trevor Cree, Phil Mottershead, Colin Langam and Dave Lindsay. Mike and Colin converting their shots to birdie the holes and share the 2’s pot.

At their prize giving back at their Clubhouse, the society members started a collection for a Competition Trophy to be awarded in the name of Shaun Brett, past Captain of the Society and former Cricket Club treasurer whose funeral and wake were held on Thursday 13th August.

The response was overwhelming, reflecting the deep affection of the members for Shaun.

Match Report for 22nd July, Singing Hills

The Chalcraft pairs competition took place at Singing Hills on Wednesday 22nd  July with a field of 19 pairs competing for the trophy.

Pairs were drawn by the Captain Brian Sands and the sponsor Mick Chalcraft matching a high handicapper with a low handicapper in each pair.  Played off ¾ handicap, the competition is judged on the sum of the stableford scores in each pair.

Defending Champions Barry Edmonds and Mike Bagshaw came Third with 56 points with Dave Lindsay and Mark Weaving Runners Up with 58 points. Clear winners though were Peter Hewitt and Phil Mottershead with 62 points.

Nearest the pin prizes were won by Mick Chalcraft (2) and Pat Phelan and Joe Bennett had the Longest Drive.

Thanks to Mick Chalcraft for his generous sponsorship.

The next event is Captain’s Day at Rookwood on the 19th August. This will be a 3 Clubs and a Putter competition played off full handicap

Match Report for 19th April, Gatton Manor

28 members turned out on Wednesday 19th April to play Gatton Manor Golf Course near Ockley in Surrey.  Although sunny and fairly warm, the north east wind coupled with the generally dry greens made playing conditions difficult, this was reflected in the general level of scoring with most players posting stabeford scores in the 20's.

Gary Macey was triumphant scoring 33 points and beating Steve Duffett into 2nd place on countback, Dennis Goldsmith took 3rd place with 32 points.  Nearest the Pin prizes were won by Trevor Cree, Mike Thompson and Steve Duffett who also won the Longest Drive.  Thanks go to Dave Brandreth who sponsored the prizes.

Match Report for 3rd April Good Friday, Hassocks

Good Friday at Hassocks is the traditional venue for the annual match between Horton GC and Steyning. This year the field was slightly depleted because Brighton were playing at home and both clubs had season ticket holders that were understandably unavailable. However, 31 players competed for the Roland Ridley Trophy with Steyning the current holders.  This year there was no stopping Horton with a substantial 30 point winning margin. Mike Riddiford from Horton took both Nearest the Pin and Longest Drive Prizes along with the top Horton player award.  Dave Sayers lost to Mike on countback with 40 stableford points.  Best of the Steyning side was Tony Standing with 34 points and Norman Carter captured second prize on countback from Robin deBuriatte.
