Man Of Match: Andy Isaacs

First league game of season and the weather didn’t look like playing ball, but eventually stopped and we were all set to start at 13.15.

Steve with the new ball, first time he had put spikes on in England, more importantly first time down the hill! Really good signs from Steve, pace on a sluggish wicket was excellent and didn’t take him long to get a breakthrough, clean bowling their opener cheaply.

His partner in crime Hywell bowled exceptionally well, with the breeze taking the ball away from the right hander made him virtually unplayable early on, and his returns emphasise that perfectly… excellent effort.

In the end it was the spin of Andy Isaacs that did the damage, taking his first 5 wicket haul of the season, he bowled with great control and variety which just made him incredibly difficult to get away. Superb effort Andy.

In general the discipline was really positive, we tied them down, made it really difficult for them to score with everyone doing their part. The only downside was a couple of missed catches at really important times and in the end became the difference between knocking them over for 130 instead of the 185! It’s a shame as it is something we really work hard on and will continue to do so.

So chasing 185 on what was probably a 220 wicket we were very confident. A fairly strong batting order with more than enough talent to knock these off and start the season with a win. Instructions were simple, take your time, loads of overs, be patient…. The usual pep talk!

Hywell got off to flyer, hitting the opener over his head for 4 in second over! Great when it comes off, although there is an argument that you could possibly keep that in the locker until your 100% ‘in’, and it soon proved to be right as Hywell tried it again and spooned it up to cover.

Oli and Ben at the crease, both more than capable of seeing it off, Oli with the confidence he has at the moment fancied the opener outside off-stump, then tried to force one which wasn’t there…. Caught short cover!

Really from then it seemed to go downhill fast, Ben snicking off to the keeper, then wickets were falling fast, Gaz and Ed managed to settle the ship for a while, and while they were at the crease the win was still on…. Then Ed got a tight LBW from the umpire, the ball still had what seemed 10-feet to get to the stumps. Gaz quickly ran out of partners due to loose shots and tight decisions, then the inevitable.. all out for a little over 100.

Not the start we wanted, but it’s done now. Plenty of positive parts to take from the game, but plenty of areas to work on too, the main one is losing this 20/20 mentality and to start valuing our wickets, 50 overs is a long time and if we can keep our heads then scores of 300+ are certainly not out of reach for the talent we have in this side.
