FATTY BATTER comes to Steyning!
1st June - This year, in conjunction with the Steyning Festival, we have organised a friendly game against the Harry Baldwin’s XI, made famous in the recent bestselling book “Fatty Batter - How Cricket Saved My Life (Then Ruined It)” by Michael Simkins. The author of the book will then be holding a talk at the club at 7pm. Please contact Peter Vielvoye for more information about attending.
Outdoor nets happen on Tuesdays at 6:30pm at the Memorial Ground - new players are welcome to come along, please introduce yourself to the captain.
Our OVERSEAS PLAYER for 2008 is Jean-Paul Stewart from Brisbane.
"CHANCE TO SHINE"
Our Club has been selected to develop cricket in local schools. Called a "Chance to Shine" - a national cricket initiative - the Club has been awarded an annual grant of £6000 to provide qualified coaching in school time for boys and girls aged 9-13. More help is always welcome to help youngsters get much needed exercise and learn the spirit of a game in a structured and safe environment. Steyning Cricket Club is situated in the heart of the country town of Steyning in West Sussex, close to the City of Brighton and Hove, enjoying spectacular views over the South Downs and Chanctonbury Ring.
Steyning has a proud history and is one of the oldest clubs in Sussex, with cricket having been played in the town since 1721. The country setting hides a fiercely competitive and ambitious club, which has risen in league status over the past few seasons. The club is now part of the Sussex Cricket League, which is the premier league in the county.
The club runs a busy and varied social club with many sports and activities taking place throughout the year, with new members, both social and cricketers, always welcome.
Playing Opportunities
Steyning Cricket Club runs 3 Saturday League teams, 1 Sunday, 1 Midweek and 4 Colts teams and 1 Ladies team.
- The 1st XI plays in the Sussex Cricket League Premier Division
- The 2nd XI plays in the Sussex Cricket League 2nd XI's 2nd Division
- The 3rd XI plays in the Sussex Cricket League 3rd XI competition
- The 4th XI play friendly cricket in association with Steyning Rebels CC
- The Sunday and Midweek XI's play friendly matches
- The Colts operate teams at Under 10's, Under 12's, Under 14's, Under 16's level, playing in local leagues.
The club are always looking for players to improve the strength of their teams and annually sponsor an
Overseas player of Australian 1st Grade standard or similar, to travel to England to play and coach at
the club.
